Karimm secures full time job at Oakray thanks to Network Homes

Karimm German a Network Homes resident has secured a full-time job at Oakray as an Improver after completing a 10-week Pre-apprenticeship programme.

Karimm was doing a part-time course studying a Level 3 Diploma in Natural Gas. As part of his course, he needed to get some practical hands-on experience. However, because of the competitive nature of the industry, he was struggling to find a placement.

And that’s where our Worksmart training and employment service came in!

Careers fair

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Network Homes partnered with Brent Council to host a career fair. Open to all – not just women – the event showcased a variety of employment and training opportunities.

In her role as Employment and Skills Manager, Kamara Jackson was there to showcase a number of opportunities with our building and repairs contractors.

As a local resident, Karimm headed to the event and spoke to Kamara about his current situation, including that he was struggling to find a placement.

Making introductions

Also, at the fair was Georgie, HR/Learning and Development Coordinator for Oakray. After hearing Karimm’s story, Kamara put him in touch with Georgie to speak with her about getting the necessary experience for his Diploma.

Kamara gave Karimm some support on his CV and cover letter, and Karimm was able to secure an interview with Oakray. After attending his interview, Karimm found out that he had successfully got a 10-week pre-apprenticeship with Oakray.

A career kickstart

Over the course of his pre-apprenticeship with Oakray, Karimm showed himself to be a passionate and engaged member of the team. And as such, he was offered full time employment once the 10 weeks were over! His new role is an ‘Improver’ within the Domestic Gas and Heating department and he’ll be starting on August 12.

Georgie from Oakray said of Karimm: “I attended the International Women’s Day event and one of the people that specifically stood out t me was Karimm – he had a great attitude and seemed extremely keen to learn more about the industry.

“Weekly feedback from the engineers and Karimm’s supervisor were outstanding. He demonstrated that he is extremely punctual, hardworking, eager to learn and is a great communicator with colleagues, clients and residents. These are all key attributes that we are looking for in potential employees.

“We are very much looking forward to having Karimm on board full time and we feel that he is going to be an asset to our team and and our company.”
