Ending your tenancy: Social tenants

This page provides a guide to social tenants on how to end your tenancy with SNG and your responsibilities. 

Giving notice

You can let us know that that you plan to end to end your tenancy by contacting us. Please note that a minimum notice period of four weeks is required.

Moving home assessment

Once we receive your notice, we will schedule a moving home assessment in which we will:

  • Inspect the property and identify any repairs or maintenance needed.
  • Provide guidance on how to leave the property in good condition.

Preparing to move

Ensure your home is completely empty, thoroughly cleaned, and free of any personal belongings. This includes all rooms, cupboards, and outdoor spaces.

Complete any necessary repairs and redecorate as needed. Report any repairs that are our responsibility before you move by contacting us at 0300 373 3000.

Dispose of bulky items through your local refuse and recycling centre or arrange for a bulk collection from your local council. Some councils offer free or discounted bulky waste collections. Contact them for details or let us know if you need assistance.

Ensure all keys are returned, including communal door key/fob(s), gas card, and electric key if applicable.

We will install a key safe before your move-out date and provide you with the code for easy return.

Take final gas and electric meter readings and provide them to your utility supplier to settle your final energy bill accurately.

Continue paying rent until your tenancy officially ends.

Ensure your rent account is clear and settle any outstanding debts promptly to avoid potential legal actions.
