Network Homes creates LGBTQ+ residents group

01 March 2022

We are pleased to announce that we are creating a new LGBTQ+ resident group! The LGBTQ+ community represents people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and those Questioning their gender or sexuality, it also represents other identities not specifically covered in the five other initials (+). The group is open for all residents to join including allies of the LGBTQ+ community. Get in touch with us today, if you'd like to join!

In February we reflected on LGBTQ+ history month, which marked 50 years since the first Pride event in the UK. Stonewall, one of the largest LGBT rights organisation in Europe, had a theme for this year which was exploring the history of Pride, along with some often overlooked identities, to show how we are always stronger, better and prouder together. This prompted us to look again at how we can engage with and include residents in the work we do. During the month, our colleague-led LGBTQ+ group focused their attention on putting together the LGBTQ+ resident group, as well as raising awareness about the work they do and their plans for the future.

Having achieved HouseProud Pledge Pioneer accreditation in 2021, we recognise the need to continue and expand on the ways we offer support for our LGBTQ+ residents. To show our commitment, we intend to level up to the HouseProud Pledge Plus accreditation. Part of this process includes communicating and working with residents to develop our LGBTQ+ action plan, considering specific issues they may have. We want the voices of our LGBTQ+ residents to be heard and the creation of an LGBTQ+ resident group is a great way to do this.

We plan to run an event in the coming months, where members will have the opportunity to tell us their views on how best to champion LGBTQ+ rights throughout the whole organisation. The group will be led by members of our colleague-led LGBTQ+ action group, facilitating a safe and supportive space for those who are part of the community.

The LGBTQ+ community should be a place where everyone, no matter their identity, sexual orientation or preferences, feels welcome. Our LGBTQ+ resident group has inclusivity at its heart and welcomes all representation. The group is also open to passionate and inclusive allies, who think they could add to our open discussions. We want the group to be shaped in the best interests of both LGBTQ+ colleagues and residents, so we offer the opportunity for you to bring any ideas on the future of the group to the table.
